I am a contemporary painter. My goal is to create artwork that is strong and colorful. I start by making doodle drawings for a design idea. Next, I often create handmade papers that become part of the painting. I am an intuitive artist. I draw with wax resist on my canvas or paper first, then play with the colors of pigment.
As a child plays with materials, I enjoy moving my handmade paper shapes around until I see pleasing shapes. I also love the process of squeezing out fresh color onto my palette and watching as the magic happens. The simple process of drawing with wax or a bold marker to define shapes can be delightful to the senses.
I create colorful, one of a kind works of art with strong design elements. My hope is that my audience will feel joyful each time they view my work. Making a mark on a blank sheet of paper with wax or graphite can begin an unpredictable work of art.
In my work I want to see brush strokes, crayon marks, wax resist and textures that excite me. My hope is that my work stands out as strong, gutsy, and vivid.
My inspiration is from Picasso, Matisse, and many other contemporary artists who have taught me over the years. Nature is one of my greatest inspirations. Observing the light in a landscape at sunset inspires me to see light and shadows in a beautiful new way.
